VIRGINIA FLECK

7pm-9pm

Saturday 29 September

Caroline Wright is a painter and a cellist, and finds the disciplines to instruct each other. Wright's paintings are both exuberant and contemplative, merging aspects of music, movement, and landscape. With drippy acrylics and inks on surfaces as varied as rice paper, paper bags, and fabric, Wright uses painting to slow down and connect to the rhythm underlying life. She also enjoys collaborating with musicians, dancers, and filmmakers, to explore how these art forms overlap.

After graduating from Brown in 2004, Wright moved to Paris and lived with artists from all over the world in a squatted, abandoned state building in Belleville. This creative and challenging environment demanded a strong personal vision, and imprinted the possibility of a life supported by and for art-making. Wright returned to her hometown of Austin in 2006 and is represented by Martine Chaisson Gallery in New Orleans.

Fusebox Presents

haircuts by children + john malkovich

This fall, Fusebox presents Mammalian Diving Reflex's acclaimed Haircuts By Children, featuring Austin 5th graders and real scissors, as part of East Side Studio Tour on November 12th & 13th. Our partnership with Texas Performing Arts continues with The Infernal Comedy, a dynamic collision between contemporary theatre and Baroque opera featuring John Malkovich, October 24th & 25th.

Haircuts by Children is a performance about wild haircuts, power and trust. We challenge our audience and viewers to set their vanity aside, relinquish control, and trust that a 10-year-old has the creative ability, dexterity and responsibility to command a sharp pair of scissors. Conceived by Canadian performance company Mammalian Diving Reflex, East Side 5th graders will take over the Peacock Salon during the 2011 East Side Studio Tour (Nov 12-13) and give free haircuts to adults. Haircuts will also be featured in the official EAST preview event hosted by Art Alliance Austin on Nov. 10.
